Dear Surgeon Colleagues,
Why should someone publish his/her surgical work? Many establishments make it mandatory to have a minimum required number of publications in indexed journals, for career advancement. Numerous publishers are appealing to the potential writers for their work. This creates great confusion in the minds of novice surgeons who want to publish and at the same time maximize the visibility of their published work. Recently NMC has made it incumbent for residents to clear the Basic Course in Biomedical Research also. But they should be encouraged to publish their findings and pass a message to their specialty colleagues. I have recently noticed that the Kerala University of Health Sciences is financially helping its residents who publish their thesis in indexed journals.
Applicants for extremely competitive higher surgical training in the United Kingdom require a minimum of 5 publications in PubMed indexed journals.
For prospective studies, multi-institutional research collaboration may help to increase the power of evidence and the chance for publication. This type of multi institutional collaboration is largely non-existing in our country. Systematic reviews with or without meta-analysis usually provide highest level of evidence and can be performed from data collection to publication from home. Many surgical journals accept pertinent case reports. Letters to Editor and View Points can stimulate academic discussions and propagate new ideas.
To improve the citations, simply publishing a work may not be enough. The authors have to work towards increasing the visibility of their work by presenting their work in scientific conferences or by depositing the article in institutional repositories. Authors need to make sure that they do not violate the copy right rule of the Journal also.
